The gold standard for all medical health care is the examination. There are many types of examinations specialized for the system or problem being investigated. The types of examinations we provide are as follows:

  • General or annual health exam
  • Prior to purchase or prepurchase exam
  • New Foal & Mare Exam
  • Insurance exam
  • Dental exam
  • Prebreeding exam (mare or stallion)
  • Lameness
  • Neurological examination

Each examination may contain a unique battery of tests designed to highlight issues related to that system.

Internal Medicine

Bristol Veterinary Service offers a large array of diagnostics and treatments for problems ranging from:

  • Colic
  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Lameness
  • Reproductive
  • Respiratory

Our veterinarians are required to obtain advanced training annually on different areas of general medicine, thus guaranteeing you and your animals the most current medicine available.

Most procedures can be performed on the farm or as an outpatient at our clinic. For those cases that require hospitalization and more specialized medical intervention we work with several surrounding referral hospitals to provide your animal with state of the art care and treatment.

Lameness evaluation is one of the most common medical issues Bristol Veterinary Service handles. Examination using history, visual evaluation in motion, musculoskeletal palpation /manipulation, diagnostic analgesia (blocking), and imaging (digital radiography and ultrasonography) provides an accurate diagnosis. If more advanced testing is necessary (nuclear scan, MRI, etc), referral to regional specialist is available. Once diagnosed we provide numerous therapeutic treatment regiments that are tailored for you and your horses needs.

Bristol Vet provides a large variety of treatment options.

  • Cryosurgery (dermatology)
  • Shockwave (lameness)
  • Immunotherapy:
    • Stem Cell therapy (lameness)
    • Platelet Enriched Plasma (lameness)
  • Acupuncture

Health Certificates / Passports / Export

Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (health certificates) are required for the transportation of most animals. Depending on where and why you are moving an animal there are international, federal, and state regulations that must be met prior to any transportation of livestock across jurisdictions. Even within an individual state, movement to a horse show, state park, or equine event may require a health certificate and/or a current negative coggins test. Requirements for a health certificate may vary depending on state of destination; always check with our office prior to traveling and don’t wait until the last moment. You may click on the USDA link on our website for additional information.

Bristol Veterinary Service is well versed in starting and maintaining passports for those horses requiring them for competition. For information on acquiring an equine passport go to www.usef.org/.  Click on USEF passport application forms. Exportation of horses from the United States to other countries may be an intricate and time sensitive process. We have exported horses all over the world and can help you navigate these waters successfully.

Imaging is the use of advanced medical equipment as a diagnostic tool, helping to provide a more accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and choice of treatment. Imaging tools include:

  • Digital Ultrasound
  • Digital Radiography
  • Traditional Ultrasound
  • Endoscopy

The use of laboratory based testing of blood, tissues, and other body samples is critical in providing good health care to your horses. Bristol Veterinary Service has in-house analyzers for routine blood work. We also perform all fecal parasite examinations in-house. For more specific testing we utilize over 15 different laboratories.  When choosing a laboratory we look for quality, expertise, turnaround time, and value.

Reproductive Services

Both mare and stallion services ranging from preconception through neonatal health care are provided. The services include:

  • Prebreeding mare examination
  • Stallion / Semen evaluation
  • Breeding consultation and services
    • Natural cover
    • Fresh cool shipped artificial insemination
    • Frozen artificial insemination
  • Pregnancy diagnosis
  • Pregnancy wellness programs
  • Post birth mare examination
  • Neonatal and newborn wellness programs

Geriatric Medicine

Senior horses often require special care and monitoring during the later third of their lives. Attention to diet, dentistry, chronic joint problems, and age related diseases are just some of the areas of concern in the older horse. Geriatric does have to mean useless or poor quality of life. Bristol Veterinary Service emphasizes the need to discuss and develop wellness protocols for the individual and their specific needs. End of life consulting is also available.

Nutrition Consulting

What and how we feed our horses is the most singularly important and costly thing we do for them. And it does not have to be complicated. Your horse’s nutritional program will depend on age, job, time of year and underlying health issues. In a time when there are numerous quality brands of feed on the market and even more supplements it can become confusing as to what is really necessary. Consulting on individual and herd diets is the hallmark of a well managed and health conscience farm.

Bristol Vet provides both ambulatory and in-clinic surgical options. Our clinic provides both a surgical suite and standing stocks to perform a variety of surgical procedures. Surgeries include castrations, tumor /mass removal and biopsy, and laceration repair. For more specialized surgical procedures we work with several regional referral hospitals with board certified surgeons.

We offer an in house pharmacy option for clients with a doctor-client-patient relationship. An online pharmacy is also available with savings, home delivery, and convenience that are not available on certain products through Bristol Vet. For those that are comfortable giving their own inoculations, we offer competitively priced vaccines.
